Running in Winter: My Motivation

I didn’t run very much or very often over the holiday season. Instead, I baked cherry oat bread, feasted on lobster, and practiced yoga—all of which I enjoyed immensely but didn’t leave me with the elation or satisfaction I experience after a good run. I wanted to run more in the new year, and today I received an acknowledgement of my progress in the form of a Nike+ badge for running five weeks in a row.

Getting Used to Autumn Running Again

I love running outside in the summer, with the heat bearing down like thick molasses and sweat making my skin shine. There’s something about a blistering sun overhead and the smell of sunblock slathered all over my face that says freedom like nothing else. I also like winter running, bundled in extra socks, a hoodie, ear warmers, and mittens, when I sweat through all my layers as though it were summer again. Running during spring or autumn, especially autumn, is a much greater struggle.

A New Running Record

Sometimes it is such a struggle to go running. Today was one of those days: a long, tiring 8 hours at work, followed by an open-mouthed doze on the subway ride home. It took every ounce of energy I had to motivate myself to lace up my Asics Gel Noosa Tri 9 sneakers, but in the end I was glad that I did because I earned a new Nike achievement.
