Learning Yoga: Gate Pose

One of my most joyful yoga experiences came one early morning while practicing a side-bend sequence that I tore out of my monthly Yoga Journal magazine. As I leaned into Gate Pose, or Parighasana, I felt my body loosening and all of the tension flowing from my limbs, and I just couldn’t help my smile and think how lucky I felt to have wonderful people in my life, a happy and welcoming home, and a peaceful spot to practice yoga. So I really wanted to share Gate Pose with you as the next post in my yoga series in hopes that you might share in some of that joy and, even if just for a minute, let your worries slip away and focus on what you’re most thankful for.

Recipe: Basil-Parsley Pesto & Bacon Pasta

After reading about a homemade pesto sauce at Little Sprouts Learning, I felt inspired to try my hand at making this classic Italian staple. Though most traditional recipes call for either basil or parsley, I decided to combine the two because I had ample amounts of both herbs flourishing in my garden. Although I think the recipe could still use a little bit of tweaking, it resulted in a healthy, tasty sauce. But because Todd likes meat, we also decided to add bacon to our pasta. This recipe serves about four people, depending upon how much each of them eat. We found that it was too much for just the two of us, but we didn’t mind because that meant we’d have leftovers to eat another day!

Friday’s Nightmare Dreams Big with New Music and Merch

Since 2009, Staten Island band Friday’s Nightmare has dabbled in the local music scene, playing small-scale shows and focusing on their most popular songs. But recently they stepped up their efforts, releasing a seven-song EP in 2013 and a double A-side single, Animals, in 2014 on Shoreline Records. Their DIY ethos has spurred the creation of super cute t-shirts and an upcoming music video to help build their fan base, get booked at bigger venues, and have some fun.

Returning Home Sweet Home

I love traveling, from flipping through magazines on the plane ride to exploring new places and having incredible adventures. My recent trip to Disney World with my boyfriend checked all of those boxes. We ate at some delicious restaurants, like The Wave; we ventured on Disney’s Wild Africa Trek in Animal Kingdom, which I’ll hopefully get a chance to review in a later blog post; and I saw my first Cirque Du Soleil show ever. Todd and I even found time to exercise by doing yoga in our hotel room, riding surrey bikes around the boardwalk, jogging around our resort, swimming in the pool, and walking pretty much from the moment we woke up to the minute we collapsed in bed every night. Of course, I can’t forget the most exciting part of our trip: our engagement. Todd popped the question on the observatory deck of the California Grill restaurant, right before we watched the fireworks exploding over Magic Kingdom. As you can probably guess from the picture, I said yes. After our stay in Disney World, we visited my grandparents and had a great time cooking Hungarian food like palacsinta and chicken paprikas with them. We also went bowling (they won) and played cards (they won again).

My First Time at Cirque Du Soleil

I only have vague memories of visiting the circus as a child, and I’m not sure if those are real or imagined. I’ve longed to watch a circus show for some time now, so when planning this Disney World vacation, Todd and I decided to purchase tickets to Cirque Du Soleil: La Nouba. The largest theatrical producer in the world, Cirque du Soleil is a Canadian entertainment company that combines global circus styles and continual live music to create jaw-dropping performances. La Nouba is the company’s show in residence at Disney World, running 90 minutes without an intermission in a custom-built theater since 1998. The ticket hints at the show’s grace and eccentricity, and the seat plan below demonstrates the layout of the theater. We sat in section 103, Row D; I think any seat would have offered a good view, but we did have to crane our necks a little bit for the aerial performances.

Restaurant Review: The Wave … of American Flavors, at Disney’s Contemporary Review

I didn’t plan on posting up a restaurant review quite so soon after my recent post raving about Artist Point, but only two days later I discovered what might actually be my favorite restaurant at Disney World: The Wave … of American Flavors at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Those of you who’ve been reading this blog for a while know that I’m all about fresh, natural food with as little processing as possible–and that’s what The Wave is all about too. Many of the ingredients are locally sourced and organic, and most entrees come with a bounty of delicious veggies that excellently complement the dish. I’m not a picky eater, but I am also not afraid to speak my mind if there’s something I don’t like, and I have to say that I had not one complaint about this meal (except for the fact that I can never get used to the taste of Florida tap water)!

Jogging and Exploring at Walt Disney World’s Art of Animation Resort

Todd and I have been having a great couple of days at Disney World so far, even though we haven’t actually gone to any of the theme parks yet. On our first day, we had a really fresh dinner at Artist’s Point, and yesterday we spent some time strolling along the boardwalk, renting surrey bikes, and playing miniature golf. We also ate a couple of snacks, including a delicious (but slightly overwhelming in the Florida heat) peanut butter, bacon, and banana brownie bar.
