I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with laughter and joy! I had a lot of fun in the kitchen trying out some new recipes (like butternut squash & spinach lasagna and ricotta cheesecake) with Todd, and of course sharing a bountiful meal with my family. This year, I felt most thankful for Todd and his generosity and understanding, the love of and for my family, those close friends you can tell anything to, my interesting job copyediting at O and the great people I work with, the Lightbringer fantasy series by Brent Weeks, and that I have time for jogging and exercising.
As some of you know and as others have seen, we’re finally done with major apartment renovations and updates! Several weeks of painting, building, organizing, rearranging, and cleaning have paid off: the apartment really does feel like home now. I just wanted to quickly share a few pictures with you so you can see how it turned out. It doesn’t quite look the way I originally planned when browsing through Ikea earlier this year, but I’m so happy with how it has turned out. Please share your thoughts—and if anyone knows how to clean a wood laminate floor, I’d appreciate the advice!
For the past two weeks, I have been completely immersed in renovating the downstairs apartment that Todd and I hope to move into by the first week in June. We’ve already ordered some furniture, picked out new kitchen cabinets and appliances, and pulled up the old carpets. Lately we’ve been focused solely on painting. Unfortunately, we’re not very good at it, so it’s a good thing we have my dad to help us out!
It really does feel like a journey to wander through an Ikea. Around each bend, a new showroom beckons with furniture that doesn’t fit your color scheme but looks so awesome you can’t resist touching it and checking out the price. In the Marketplace, you load one set of plates into your cart, only to replace it twice with sets you like better. You end up buying a black lamp because it was only $9 and you never know when you’re going to need it. Finally, after three hours, you make your purchases, bring them out to the car, and then go back inside the store because you can’t resist Swedish meatballs, mashed potato, and lingonberries.
